Work Placements and CSCS-logoed cards

Those undertaking a construction industry work placement of three weeks or more should hold a valid card.

Those undertaking a construction industry work placement of three weeks or more should hold a CSCS-logoed Industry Placement card, or an equivalent, from the appropriate CSCS Alliance member card scheme.

The CSCS Alliance is the collective voice of the 37 schemes that carry the logo, who collectively provide cards for sectors and occupations across construction and the Built Environment.

This guidance is aligned with Department for Education guidance on level 2 and 3 construction qualifications, which sets three weeks as the minimum duration for a construction industry placement.

CSCS-logoed Industry Placement cards, or an equivalent, is for for those undertaking the Construction Industry Placement programme, as well as individuals attending site as part of T-Level qualifications or Foundation Apprenticeships.

Placements of less than three weeks, such as short taster sessions and general work experience, do not require a card. Site managers remain responsible for inducting and, where appropriate, escorting such individuals and those in non-construction occupations.

When a card is required

A CSCS-logoed Industry Placement card, or equivalent from the appropriate member of the Alliance, is required where the individual is on a construction industry placement linked to a level 2 or 3 construction qualification. The placement must last three weeks or more and take place on an active construction site.

When a card is not required

A card is not required for work experience or taster placements lasting less than three weeks. Equally, cards aren’t needed for classroom, workshop or college-based learning that does not involve on-site construction work.

Verifying a CSCS-logoed card

Employers should use CSCS Smart Check to verify a card before the placement begins, and again as part of the workplace induction.
